In this week, activities such as parades, culinary activities, handicraft samples, and popular festivals are held, among others with the aim of keeping the traditions of Baracoa in force.
Although it is not a holiday, April 19 is a very important date in Cuban history as it commemorates the Victoria de la Bahía de Cochinos (Victory of the Bay of Pigs), also known as the Batalla de Playa Girón (Battle of Playa Girón). This marks an event that took place in 1961, in which the troops mainly made up of Cuban exiles from the United States tried to invade the island and were driven back on the coastline by the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR). To learn more about this, you can visit the Museo de Playa Girón (Museum of Playa Girón), in the province of Matanzas, which preserves elements, photographs and historical data. Nowadays, on this date the students have a short school break called "victory week".
During April, you can also attend the Bienal de La Habana (Havana Biennial), a contemporary art show exhibited in different places of cultural interest in the city. It is the most important and popular event for the visual arts in Cuba, and its main objective is the interaction and exchange of local and international artists with the public through the recognition and exhibition of their work. Spaces such as the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Museum of Fine Arts), the Centro Wifredo Lam (Wifredo Lam Center), the Centro Hispanoamericano de la Cultura (Hispano-American Cultural Center), the Instituto Superior de Arte (Higher Institute of Art), among other establishments and galleries participate in this great month-long event.
