On the eve of the end of the year in Cuba there is joy, and the atmosphere is filled with color and enthusiasm for the arrival of the new year. As the night approaches, the flavor of rum, mojito and daikiri intensifies and the streets fill with people dressed in white, meeting and cheering to the rhythm of the music.

The traditional menu of the Cuban New Year's Eve is usually made up of roasted pig or suckling pig, congrí rice with beans, yuca with mojo, tostones and vegetable salad. For dessert, there would be homemade recipes such as coconut candy, flan, torrejas or fritters. The families distribute the preparation of each dish, so that when they get together nothing is missing.

If you are wondering where to spend the end of the year in Cuba, many accommodations and restaurants in the most touristic and historic areas offer banquets with the typical dishes for this time. The Hotel Copacabana (Copacabana Hotel), the Comodoro and the Hotel Meliá Habana (Meliá Habana Hotel) are some of those that organize events that include dinner and a show.

Plaza de la Catedral (Cathedral Square), in Old Havana, is another important meeting point. A gala dinner is organized to receive diners willing to have fun and enjoy musical shows that complete the experience. It is also typical for people to gather in the squares and on the famous Malecón in Havana to toast and enjoy the fireworks that illuminate the capital, filling it with color and joy.

Starting at 12, the offer expands and dance venues such as bars and nightclubs open and are filled with all those who seek to continue with the festivities.

One of the New Year customs of the Cuban people is that when the 12:00 bells ring, they throw a bucket of water into the street, as a symbol of taking out and throwing away everything bad left by the old year, leaving room for the new and better things to come in. Experience this particular tradition and let the new year be filled with good wishes.

Why visit Cuba for New Year’s Eve?

Cuba is an ideal destination to visit at any time, but celebrating New Year’s Eve in this tropical paradise is an excellent plan for any traveler who wants to make their vacation a unique experience. Its customs, the warmth of its people and the catchy rhythm of its music are enhanced at this time, manifesting themselves in different celebrations that take place throughout the country to welcome a new season.

The end of the year parties in Cuba are not limited only to traditional ones around the world such as Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year's Eve. Additionally, in December and January there are three dates that commemorate very important events for Cuban culture, that is why the last days of this month are lived with emotion and are synonymous with rejoicing, fun and merriment.

On December 24, while in the rest of Cuba some are preparing to celebrate Christmas Eve, in the city of Remedios, in the central area of the country, one of the popular and best-known festivals in Cuba takes place: the Parrandas de Remedios. This is one of the most important and recognized national events, along with the Carnaval de Santiago de Cuba (Carnival of Santiago de Cuba) and the Charangas de Bejucal. This tradition dates back to 1820, when a priest asked a group of children to help him wake up the neighbors by making noise in the streets, to attend the Misas de Aguinaldo (Aguinaldo Masses), held at dawn. Over the years, this event has evolved, extending its duration and adding attractions for the crowds that are present, until it became what it is known to be today. The proposal includes a competition between two teams from the town that compete to show who is the best, through dances, floats, decorations and fireworks shows. Although a short break is taken at midnight to give place to the celebration of the Misa de Gallo, once it is finished the fun and lively activities are resumed and fill the streets with joy, music and color.

January 1 and 2 are the most important holidays in Cuba, commemorating the Triunfo de la Revolución (Triumph of the Revolution) and Día de la Victoria (Victory Day) respectively. The origin of this celebration dates back to 1959, when the revolutionary leader Fidel Castro entered Havana with his troops, managing to overthrow the government of the dictator Fulgencio Batista. That event laid the foundations of the Cuban Revolution, generating a great historical, social and political change in the country, giving rise to today's Cuba.

Therefore, traveling to Cuba to spend New Year’s Eve is much more than welcoming the new one. Delve into its history and customs, go back to the origin of its culture and understand its political and social present.
