Cuba is not the most popular destination for big waves surfing, but there are interesting places with great breakers in the Northern coast, close to Havana, in Brisas del Mar, Mégano.
In the East end of the island, the province of Guantánamo offers the best conditions for surfing since the waving is more constant from the end of September up to December, combined with the great tropical storms of the Caribbean sea which provide soil waves.
For example, you can enjoy one of the best points for surfing in Yumurí, offers “right waves” at 30 km. Eastern from Baracoa.
Other places with especial interest are:
San Antonio Cape, in the west end of the province of Pinar del Río. Gibara (Holguín)
Playa Mar Verde, in Santiago de Cuba
La Setenta
Playas del Este Beaches
Sun Beach
Cayo Coco
However, Cuba has been confirmed as the ideal destination for practicing kitesurfing because of its wind conditions and climatic mercy, between 16º and 30º; particularly from October to March, to avoid the hurricanes season. Many kiters from all over the world prefer Cuba’s Northern coasts, where the predominant wind is East-Northwest mainly the whole year: Santa María del Mar, Varadero, Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Coco.
In Varadero there is an excellent school for beginners, managed by expert Cuban kiters; just as a great quantity of companies which give particular classes for beginners and advanced surfers all over the country.
