Cuba offers multiple destinations to enjoy your vacation in October. These are divided between visiting beautiful cities, enjoying the paradisiacal beaches and getting to know the exuberant Cuban nature.
If there is a city that you should definitely visit, it is Havana. Stroll along the famous Malecón or feel that you have returned to the past in Old Havana. It’s a perfect mix between architecture, history, sea and the joy of a whole town that you must experience.
Visit Santiago de Cuba and undergo the different activities of this wonderful place. It’s an ideal area for those who enjoy mountain tourism, boasting incredible landscapes and trails that manage to reach the highest peak in the country, the Pico Turquino. Here you can enjoy all the flora and fauna of this fantastic place. You can also tour the entire Sierra Maestra and get to know the Comandancia de la Plata, a historic place for the Cuban people.
The wonderful city of Trinidad will welcome you with an impressive colonial-style architectural heritage. Walk through its cobbled streets, surrounded by wonderful churches, large palaces and old buildings that make it the Cuban Museum City, in addition to being listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
If your intention is to relax, do not hesitate to go to the resort destination of Varadero, with its kilometer-long beaches of fine white sand, ideal for tanning and having some daiquiris and mojitos. Here you can enjoy the most entertaining water sports and the natural wonders of the seabed by scuba diving. In addition, less than 50 kilometers from the city is the city of Matanzas, wherein you can visit El Palmar del Junco, the oldest baseball stadium in the country; or witness the passion of a game of the Serie Nacional de Béisbol (National Baseball Series), together with the fans of the Cocodrilos de Matanzas (Crocodiles of Matanzas). You will also be able to visit the Parque Nacional Ciénaga de Zapata (Ciénaga de Zapata National Park), the largest wetland in the entire Caribbean. Here you can see the Cuban crocodile, flamingos, and many other species that are part of this diverse swampy ecosystem.
The most incredible beaches and those ideal for water sports thanks to their crystal clear waters and wonderful underwater ecosystems, are the cayos. Cayo Santa María, Cayo Largo del Sur and the Jardines del Rey (especially Cayo Coco and Cayo Guilermo) are places that cannot be missed on your itinerary during the month of October, especially for the most sporty and adventurous.
The month of October is full of activities throughout all of Cuba so that you can be dazzled by its diverse culture. For example, the Fiesta de la Cubanía, which is celebrated annually between October 17 and 20 in the municipality of Bayamo, Granma. In this fiesta, you will be able to get to know the development of Cubans of the different arts, getting to know artists, intellectuals, writers, among others. You can also participate in handicraft fairs, books, band meetings, cultural exhibitions, plays and interesting colloquia that are created together with experts on different topics. The Fiesta de la Cubanía culminates with the celebration of the Día de la Cultura Cubana (Day of Cuban Culture), on October 20, which was established to commemorate the first time that Cuba's national anthem, La Bayamesa, was sung as it was named by the Cuban troops in the War of Independence. This day is celebrated throughout Cuba and the different municipalities carry out cultural activities of all kinds for the enjoyment of visitors and fellow citizens.
In October, Matanzas is in a celebration. In addition to celebrating the city's anniversary on October 12, with a multifaceted party and commemorative activities, you will be able to witness the Festival de Bailador Rumbero (Rumbero Dancer Festival) from October 10 to 19. Witness 10 days of incredible dances with all the flavor and rhythm of this traditional genre of Cuban music.
In the city of Holguín, the Fiesta de la Cultura Iberoamericana (Ibero-American Culture Festival) takes place during the last week of October, in order to celebrate the Encuentro de Dos Mundos (Meeting of Two Worlds). It is a multifaceted event, whose objective is that its participants get to know the different cultures of Latin America. For this, activities are developed that allow learning about the history of nations, literature, music, plastic arts, among others. This is truly a unique opportunity to get closer to the cultural wealth of a very diverse and interesting continent.
October is a month that is still full of art. Even during the last week of October and the first days of November the Festival Internacional de Teatro de La Habana (International Theater Festival of Havana) takes place. In these 14 days, theater is breathed in all parts of the Cuban capital. Theater halls, squares, streets, schools and even hospitals are places where you can enjoy the spectacular works that the various companies, Cuban and foreign, will prepare for you. In the same weeks, the Festival Internacional de Ballet de La Habana (International Ballet Festival of Havana) takes place every two years, which is held at the Gran Teatro de La Habana. Ensembles from more than 50 countries participate in this festival, where you can witness the most prestigious actors and works in the world of dance.
However, not everything is culture, the month of October is also historical, as it commemorates the Anniversary of the Death of Che Guevara (October 8) and the Anniversary of the physical disappearance of Camilo Cienfuegos (October 28), both important iconic guerrillas of the Cuban Revolution. The tribute to Camilo Cienfuegos takes place with an important walk along the Malecón with military troops who offer flowers to the sea, a ceremony worth observing and accompanying Cuban citizens to.
Cuba welcomes you in October with milder and more pleasant temperatures than in the summer months, being between 23° and 29°C. The 11 hours of daylight are ideal to enjoy your trip to Cuba. You will find rainfall mainly at night, which will not prevent you from enjoying your itinerary. Never forget to bring your high factor sunscreen to take care of your skin, light clothing and a light rain jacket in case of small drizzles at this time of year.
