The city of Guantánamo, also known as Gitmo by the North Americans, was founded around 1796 and started to develop at the beginning of the 19th century, with the arrival of French and Haitian men fled the revolutionary wars in Haiti.
Its aboriginal name means “land between rivers”, referring to the location of the place, and the naming of Guantánamo is firstly found in official documents in 1524, specifically on the will of the Spaniard conqueror Diego Velázquez.
Guantánamo, built up as the capital of the province, is a huge crowded city with 200,000 inhabitants. Its two outstanding interesting points are the Parroquia de Santa Catalina de Riccis Parish, currently hosting the titles of cathedral of the city; and the Provincial Museum, which goes all over the guantanamera history, from its pre-Columbian origins to the middle of the 20th century.
Furthermore, it is a great city to enjoy the Guantanamera Saturday nights in the centric Pedro A. Pérez Street, where you will enjoy outdoors restaurants and live music.
