If you are not used to tipping, you’ll learn fast in Cuba. Valets, “septos de son” (musicians), waiters, tourist guides, or even the women at the entrance of the bathrooms, all expect a decent tip.
Musicians that entertain tourists while having dinner or chortle expent several convertible pesos as tip, although you should only give them what you think the music deserves. Women in charge of bathrooms expect between 1 and 5 CUP, and valets around 5 CUP. The average tip for a trip guide per person is 50 CUP. A decent tip for a taxi driver is a 10% of what the taximetre indicates, except if a fixed price has been negotiated beforehand.
Tips can easily solve most of the problems in Cuba. For example, if you want to leave your hotel room later than expected, a small tip of 75 CUP can make the exception happen.
