The Monumento a las Víctimas del Maine (Monument to the Victims of the USS Maine) is located closeby to El Malecón, to the west of the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, in the district of Vedado, Havana.
This monument was built in 1926 by Félix Cabarrocas to honor the victims of the USS Maine, a war ship that mysteriously exploded in the bay of Havana during 1898, becoming the US’ excuse to declare war on Spain.
Previously, during the period of US domination, it was crowned by a dome with an imperial eagle statue with its wings outspread, and three busts of North American politicians. Both the eagle and the busts were removed during the Revolution in 1959, adding the inscription “To the victims of the El Maine sacrificed by the imperialist lust in its keenness to take control of the island of Cuba”, making the monument as it is today.
