The Museo Napoleónico (Napoleonic Museum) is located in a construction that was originally used as a home by Orestes Ferrara, one of the authors of the collection currently exhibited in the museum. It is a mansion inspired by a 16th century Renaissance Florentine palace and built in the 1920s by architects Govantes and Cabarrocas. The mansion, located in the district of Vedado (Municipio Plaza de la Revolución) of Havana, was built in Italian marble, wrought iron and finest quality woods.
This museum houses a collection of around 7,000 personal items, weapons, and art works related to the life of Napoleon Bonaparte, gathered by Julio Lobo, a Cuban sugar magnate, and Orestes Ferrara, a politician. In the collection, sketches by Voltaire, paintings of the Battle of Waterloo, a bronze death mask made by his personal doctor two days after his death, the weapons Napoleón took to the Battle of Borodino, and the furniture that can be seen in a recreation of Napoleon’s study and personal chamber stand out.
This museum, refurbished in 2011, boasts the largest and most varied collection of items that still exist from the Napoleonic, and so is one of the most important museums in the world in this field.
