These are the ruins of a former ranch that was the beacon of splendour of coffee plantations in western Cuba. This was one of the first plantations in Cuba and is now listed as National Monument.
It was built between 1813 and 1820 by the German Cornelio Sauchay. In its peak, it employed 450 enslaved workers and boasted 750,000 plants.
Nowadays, it still preserves it manor in Neoclassical style, and the water storage system. Behind the main house, you can see the barracks for the enslaved workers and a surveillance tower.
Note the main entrance with stone columns. This place is mentioned in the novels of both Cirilo Villaverde and Alejo Carpentier.
