Soroa Orchidarium houses the largest collection of orchids of Cuba: it boasts 130 species of autochthonous orchids and almost 700 international ones. This place, located in the tiny valley next no the Manantiales (Springs) in Candelaria municipality, has been listed as National Heritage and is part of the Biosphere reserve of Sierra del Rosario. The orchidarium was built in 1943 by a lawyer from the Canary islands to honor his wife and daughter. The garden consists only of orchids imported from around the world and local species.
Currently, it houses more than 20,000 plants in more than 35,000 square meters of exhibition. It’s worth noting, among others, the Encyclia bocourtii, discovered by science in Sierra del Rosario only in the late 20th century. There is also a comprehensive library focused on orchids.
