Artemisa is the capital of the region with the same name. This town flourished thanks to exploitation of sugar and coffee in the 19th century and always attracted famous characters such as writer Ernest Hemingway or the famous Cuban poet Nicolás Guillén. However, Artemisa declined when the crops lost their importance. Nowadays, the town is known was “La Villa Roja” (The red Village) or “El Jardín de Cuba” (Cuba’s Garden) due to the fertility of its soil that even today still produces important crops, especially sugar, bananas, and tobacco.
The city features two national museums, the Martyrs Mausoleum, for those interested in the history of Cuba and its revolution, and the former Angerona Coffee Plantation, as well as a restored section of the Mariel Majana Trocha. The city also has a train station connected with Havana and a bus stop, located in the main road, in the heart of the city.
