The Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Church, also known as Iglesia de Reina Church, is a wonderful Catholic temple, Gothic in style, located in the municipality of Centro Habana, in Havana. It was built between 1914 and 1923.
Nowadays, this is the tallest church in all Cuba, but also one of the most beautiful. It is a perfect place to spend some minutes away from the racket in the city.
Talking about its architecture, the church has real Gothic elements, such as high pointed vaults, large windows, flashy stained glass windows, and pointed arches. Its beautiful 50-meter-high tower can be seen from different parts of Havana.
The Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón Church is famous for its wonderful stained glass windows representing the life of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and some parts of the life of Ignatius of Loyola and some Jesuit saints.
The temple has a central nave supported by six lateral columns crowned by quite adorned capitals, and two lateral naves forming a Latin cross.
On its interior stand out the altar, made in alabaster, wood and bronze in Madrid and exhibiting a huge statue of the Sacred Heart blessing faithful; its organ, considered one of the most beautiful in all Cuba, and the sculpture of the image of Our Lady of Fatima, placed at the bottom.
