Trains in Cuba date back to the middle of the 20th century, when the whole network (mainly for transporting sugar cane) was established even in cities. Nowadays, trains offer a proper service for customers, offering service in any regional capital, an excellent way to discover Cuba.
Currently, there are several types of trains: special ones, fast trains, those with few stops, some featuring AC, regular, slow, or frequent ones.
Some other have very old facilities. You also have a French train, quick and featuring different services such as AC or cafeteria.
The most important lines, such as that in La Havana-Santiago, have special and regular trains. Foreigners should pay tickets in cash and in CUC, and the tickets have reasonable prices.
It is advised to check always the train information before going on a trip, since schedules may be subject to change and are more oriented than factual.
Almost every station feature a window where you can buy your tickets, but - in La Havana- there is one for CUC only. When buying a ticket, we may be asked to produce our passport.
Regular trains cost 3 CUC for each 100 kilometers (approximately), whereas specials are 5.5 CUC for the same distance.
Check the schedules in the stations beforehand, since they are subject to many changes.
