El Abra State Museum is located 3 km southwest to the town Nueva Gerona. The historic plantation is worth the visit not only for the museum but also for its lovely surroundings. It was inaugurated the 28th January in 1944.
The interesting history of the museum tells that in 1870, a young José Martí spent nine weeks of exile in this farm before being expatriated to Spain. The adjacent house, nowadays, is still inhabited by the offspring of the man who fostered the Cuban idol, Giuseppe Girondella.
The museum exhibits the room that was used by José Martí during his stay there. It preserves pieces related to the life of the well-known politician: personal items, furniture, documents… You can also find an autographed book by Fermín Valdés Domínguez and the replica of the shackle that Martí used in San Lázaro Quarries.
Near the museum, a road heading north leads you to an interesting place to visit: the former marble quarry of the island. Its appeal is not only the quarry but also the ridge from where you can enjoy spectacular views of the town.
