The Municipal Museum of Isla de la Juventud is located in the 30th street in Nueva Gerona. The building, built by the Spaniards in 1853, is one of the oldest constructions in the town.
It was the Town Hall until 1963 and, since then, it has had different uses like the commissioner’s office of the local power, school of economy, languages and education or primary school. In 1995, the building was handed to the Municipal Heritage Center for its future use as a museum the following year. Then, the works started and information about Isla de la Juventud was rescued with the collaboration of the population.
Finally, the Municipal Museum was officially inaugurated in May 2000. The museum is divided in a total of eight halls with a permanent exhibition of photographs, documents and objects that show the essence of the district along different times.
