Nueva Gerona is a little and quiet town in Cuba, capital of the caribbean municipal district of Isla de la Juventud. It is located between the Sierra de Casas and the Sierra de Caballos mountains, north of the main island. The town was founded in 1830 by Americans as the colony Queen Amalia.
Being a small town and little visited, Nueva Gerona doesn’t count on a large touristic infrastructure, but it does have some resorts in the best known beach areas and numerous cozy and inexpensive private homes, besides an active range of leisure opportunities.
The old tiled roof houses with thick pillars so characteristic of the town are spread along the Calle Real Street, as well known as Calle 39 Street that constitutes the commercial and cultural center of the town. Although the magic of Nueva Gerona is in the exterior and in the landscapes that surround it, you can’t miss the most important cultural places like the Natural History Museum, El Pinero Central Park, the Clandestine Fight Museum or El Abra State Museum.
