The Aduana de Cienfuegos (Customs Office) is, without a doubt, one of the most representative buildings of this monumental city of Cuba. Located next to the Muelle Real (Royal Pier), and surrounded by slender palm trees, it paints a picturesque scene.
This architectural treasure dates back to the middle of the 19th century and, since its construction, it worked as a customs office, which gives it more authenticity. The port of Cienfuegos was of great importance in the colonial era due in part to the export of tobacco or meat. This is why the customs office was a key point in the fight against smuggling. Currently its main task is to control the border and trade with the outside.
It is a magnificent piece of Cienfuegos neoclassical style on two levels. The arcades and pillars form the central area of the lower facade. Symmetry, proportionality and elegance are the three adjectives that best define the structure. Its intense blue colour makes it blend in with the sky as well as with the sea which watches over it on the front. Likewise, as in other buildings in the area, the conservation work has been impeccable and every detail has been taken care of.
