The Museo Histórico Naval Nacional (National Historical Naval Museum) is situated in the former General Headquarters of the Southern Naval district, located in the a small promontory in Cayo Loco, around five blocks from to the northeast of Cienfuegos City’s José Martí Park.
To get here, you have to cross a wide avenue flanked by various weapons from different eras.
In was in this very place, in September 1957, that group of sailors and civilians, led by Second-Lieutenant Dionisio San Román, launched an unsuccessful uprising against the government of Batista. Said revolt is the museum’s main permanent exhibition and occupies a whole room.
Other rooms are more focused on natural history, the formation of the Earth, fauna, flora, and marine fossils. It also features exhibitions relating to the environment and sea navigation through the use of ancient instruments, as well as the replica of a boat’s bridge. From the walls of the museum, you can witness amazing views of Bahía de Jagua.
