This large natural lake is located to the north of Morón. The road to access Leche Lagoon starts in the north of the Agramonte de Morón Park. This is the largest natural lake in Cuba, with 66 km2. Its name comes from the reflecting limestone sediments at the bottom of the lake. It is interesting to mention its water is a mix of fresh and sea water.
This lagoon is visited by anglers who come attracted by carps, Atlantic tarpons, perches, and tilapias. Moreover, there is an office where you will have the chance to book fishing guided excursions and if you pay just a bit more you’ll be able to take the fishes with you or cook them on board.
A typical tradition in the lagoon are the water carnivals. They take place during the summertime since 1955 all along the canal from El Embarcadero until Leche Lagoon. Private and public boats are adorned with care and confidentiality, as the competition starts when the topics are chosen. A jury assesses each boat, paying attention to their originality, esthetic, artistic evolution, or choreographies of the participants. Three final public boats and three private ones are chosen to be winners.
