Opened in 1983, the Museo Provincial Coronel Simón Reyes Hernández (Coronel Simón Reyes Hernández Provincial Museum) is considered to be the best municipal museum in Cuba. It can be found in a mustard-yellow building that has one of Ávila’s typical porches. The building itself is a fine example of the characteristic 19th century Colonial architecture of the province. It was designed to be used as command headquarters for the Spanish army, and during the Neocolonial Republic it was the headquarters of the electoral commission. Later, in 1960, it became the Barracks of the Revolutionary Militia, and was a departure point for troops fighting in Escambray during the rebellion.
It houses fascinating exhibitions, including a scale model of La Trocha, information about Afro-Cuban culture and religion, and explanations about the rich assortment of traditional festivities in Ciego de Ávila. The museum is separated into 5 permanent exhibitions, whose topics are: archeology, colony, republic, achievements of the revolution and religious syncretism.
It is also worth walking to the corner where Marcial Gómez street and Joaquín de Agüero street merge, in order to find the Plano-mural of Ciego de Ávila, a bronze map of the city that was made in the same century as the museum’s building.
