All the roads in Ciego de Ávila lead to this Colonial park, designed in honour of the Spanish king Alfonso XII in 1877. At the beginning of the 20th century it was renamed José Martí, after the new Cuban national hero that became a martyr.

The park holds a monument of the apostle, which was erected in 1925. In its vicinity there are several important buildings. The first of these is the 1911 City Council building, which is now used as headquarters for the Provincial Government and is closed to the public. The second one is the 1947 Catholic Church, which houses the statue of San Eugenio de la Palma, the patron saint of the city. The third and final building is the majestic Main Theater, built in 1927 with the help of Ángela Jiménez.
