Christ of Havana Statue in Havana is located in the town of Casablanca, across the bay from Old Havana. The Christ is a statue of white marble created in 1958 in Italy by Cuban artist Jilma Madera.
The statue was part of a promise made by Batista’s wife shortly after he was supported by the US and survived the attack to the Presidential Palace in 1957.
The Christ was inaugurated on Christmas Day 1958, just a week after Fulgencio Batista had fled the country.
To get to the Christ of Havana statue, the best idea is to take the Ferry Casablanca and, once you reach the dock, follow the road up for 10 minutes until you reach the statue.
Note this curious fact: the artist left the eyes of the statue empty, so that it would seem as if Christ was looking at everybody from all angles.
