Cojímar is a small fishing town located seven kilometers to the east of Havana. This town is famous for being the setting of Hemingway’s most famous novel: “The Old Man and the Sea,” which allowed him to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. In the novel, the Old Man docked the boat “El Pilar” here during the 40s and 50s.
This town was established in the 17th century in the mouth of the river of same name. In 1762, it was here where the British army landed in its conquest of Havana.
Nowadays, Cojímar is a picturesque town with some touristic fame. Worth noting are the restaurant “La Terraza”, where Hemingway used to have lunch with his friend Gregorio, the captain of “El Pilar” boat. Also visit the Cojímar Turret (Torreón de Cojímar), a old Spanish fortress; the neighbourhood of Alamar, located just across the river, is believed to be the birthplace of Cuban rap and still hosts a yearly hip-hop festival; and the Pan American Stadium, built for the Pan American Games of 1991, and featuring tennis courts, olympic pools, and other facilities.
How to get there:
The easiest way to reach Cojímar is by public transport taking metrobús P-8 from Capitolio Nacional (Central Havana) to Villa Panamericana.
