The Bariay National Monument Park is a place which has a great historic value for the province of Holguín, since it is the place where Columbus landed on the 28th October 1492.
Located in Bariay Cay, inside the Cristobal Colón Natural Park, the space shows to the visitors a very similar landscape as the one found by Columbus of his first landing in Cuba. On its surroundings stand out great valuable landforms, such as de Lomas de Maniabón Hill, the known Mezquita de Colón Mosque, elevations already described in the diaries of the Admiral or the Silla de Gibara with the shape of a horse-riding saddle.
On your trip to the Bariay Park you will discover the natural port, made by volcanic rocks, the commemorative plaque which is located in the place of the landing of the Admiral, an archeological museum where you can see the remains of a 19th century Spanish fort of the huts of the natives. And, of course, you cannot miss the famous monument erected in 1992 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Columbus landing on the area. This curious monument represents the encounter between two cultures: the European one, symbolized by some ruins which remind the development of the Neoclassical culture, and the Native one, with replicas of objects made by themselves and discovered on excavations which represent their culture and development.
