The origins of the square go back to the Colonization times, since this is the place chosen by the Extremadura Captain García Holguín in 1545 to found the city.
The park, headed by the San Isidoro Cathedral, was drafted in 1720, but it was not until 1790 when it became the center of the most important political and social events of the city.
The renaming of the square, previously logically named Plaza de la Iglesia Square, is because the park was besieged in 1868 by the Major Generals Julio Grave de Peralta and Luis Marcano. Although in 1900 the square was rechristened with the name of the National Hero José Martí, everything was going to change later on, in 1916, when in the center of the park was erected the statue of the General Julio Grave de Peralta, hence the current name of the place.
The most outstanding buildings you will see on your walks by the beautiful park, are the General’s statue and the Glorieta Albanés Plaza. This last building is a square plaza with eclectic style, built in 1922, destined for music bands which, even though its destruction in 1947, was rebuilt on a basis of the original pieces at the beginning of the 21st century and opened with the name of Glorieta Albanés Plaza.
