In the surroundings of the city of Holguín you will also discover fascinating monuments you cannot stop visiting. Loma de la Cruz is one of the most relevant symbols of the city and hides a long history.
It is a landform located Northern from Holguín at 261 meters above the sea level; being one of the strategic points for the defense of the city by the Spanish Army.
The name comes from the wooden cross dominated the place and which, according to the legend, was ascend and set up for the first time in 1790 by a Franciscan friar hoping that the dry spells would end up. Since then, there is a religious-traditional Spanish festivity, the Romerías of May, being celebrated by going on pilgrimage to the overlook on the 3rd and 4th May, which were celebrated until well into the 50s of the 20th century.
At the beginning of the 20th century it was decided to restore the ascent hillsides and on the 3rd May 1950 the works were finished by setting up the cross on the top as opening symbol. To perform the works, gatherings, open-air dances, etc. were done, so all the citizens participated on its restoration. However, at the beginning of the 90s, the cross was substituted by a third one when a lightning collided with it and was destroyed.
To access to the hill, a stairway of 458 steps was built and counts with landings and benches to rest during the ascend. Although for those who just want to see the overlook, on the back of the hill it was built a highway to go by car. However, the beautiful of the visit is the ascent by the stairway, currently declared Historical Colonial Archaeological Monument of the island of Cuba.
The views from the overlook dominate the whole city and it is said that he who has not enjoyed them has not seen Holguín. You can also enjoy a restaurant located on the top. Go on the first hours of the morning since the ascent is easier than in the hotter hours.
As beautiful curiosity, you have to learn about the legend of the Holguín lovers which extends to la Loma, since the tunnel of La Periquera arrived there.
