In honor of the Father of the Nation, the name of the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes goes back to 1900.
On its origins this square was born by the shadow of the Iglesia de San José Church, from which it takes its name and it is known as Plaza de San José Square. In 1839 is delegated to it the function of Market, which was maintained for 10 years, despite the neighbours’ complains.
At the beginning of the 20th century, when the church was going to be remodeled, the square is also built, because it was in a pitiable condition after the Independence War. Once in 1900, it is rechristened as it is known today, as Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Park and in 1987 is erected the bust of the Father of the Nation.
Having a walk by the historic park you can see another outstanding monument which dates from the beginning of the 20th century. It is the well-known ‘El Angelote’, a work by the house Hugo Luissis, carver in bronze and marble of Carrara and stands in the center of the place. It represents the figure of an angle on a balloon to honor the shooted fighters in the Independence Wars. Furthermore, you can also enjoy the wonderful buildings surrounding the Park, as the Cultural Heritage Provincial Center, back then house of the professor Eduardo García Feria and his son the Doctor José A. García Castañeda or buildings occupied by important organizations such as the Cuba National Bank, the Gobierno Municipal (Municipal Government) or the Casa de Iberoamérica House, among others.
Enjoy one of the most beautiful and historical squares in Holguín.
