Located in the center of the city, the Casa-Museo del Mayor General Calixto García Íñiguez House Museum is one of the most outstanding monuments for the Holguín people, since it is the places where the famous General was born in 4th August 1839.
According to different researches, the house was originally property of an Asturian businessman, Francisco Antonio de la Carrera, who commanded to build it in 1826. In fact, the ranch preserves different elements which justify its belonging by the end of the 18th century, just as the widows of curved balusters or the late 18th century doors.
The dwelling occupied some important dimensions of land, the floor had the shape of a U, made by a principal nave and a secondary completed with two naves on both sides which communicated the inside galleries. Of all the architecture compound, it is only currently preserved the first two naves and part of which connects with the calle Frexes street.
When you visit the house museum, you will see the Mudejar style so used in the colonial architecture. The inside of the main nave is covered by a roof with the Mudejar style with four gables; and the second nave has thick trusses which make up a canopy style cover; while the inside and outside doors are “the Spanish way”, made with flat boards and kerbs on the sides.
After a little remodelings of the farm to turn it into a memorial museum of the Major General in 1974, it was declared National Monument in 1978.
Years later in 1986, it is made the complete restoration of the farm and the spaces is prepared enlarging the exhibition rooms where you can see photographs, documents and objects which remind to the personal life of the family and the most outstanding military facts around the Major General. Another room is dedicated to the exhibition of the Grave de Peralta y Zayas de Bazán family.
Along different exhibitions you can reconstruct not just the Independence years, but the ways of life of the middle classes in Colonial times.
The building also hosts an Independence Cuban Wars Specialized Information Center; including also on its archives biographic research, history of Cuba, of José Martí, etc.
Do not stop visiting the historic place witness of the childhood of one of the great heroes of the Independence.
