The fascinating Plantación de Tabaco Alejandro Robaina (Alejandro Robaina Tobacco Plantation) lies in the region of Vuelta Abajo, southwestern of Pinar del Río.

Since 1845, only the finest-grade tobacco has been cultivated here, but the famous Vega Robaina cigars were not released as a brand until 1997.

Alejandro Robaina was the only contemporary Cuban with a cigar brand under his own name. After his death in 2010, few doubt that an important chapter of the country’s tobacco-making tradition ended.

To get here, you have to take the central highway 18 kilometers towards the southwest of Pinar del Río, turn left for another highway, keep going for around 4 kilometers and turn left again, continuing a more irregular road until you arrive at the plantation.

There are guided visits to the plantation, but we recommend calling in advance or inquiring at the region’s tourism offices.

The best time to visit the plantation is from October to February, as it is tobacco crop season.
