The Guanahacabibes Peninsula National Park is located in Eastern Cuba, 94 kilometers from the city of Pinar del Río.
It is a flat and elongated peninsula with 1015 km2 of deserted coasts declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO since 1987, a dream destination for those who love nature, ecotourism and water activities such as diving.
The reserves submerged coast has a wide variety of fascinating landscapes, including large mangroves, low scrubland vegetation and an elevated platform where you’ll find a mix of white sand with coral rocks.
Thanks to its characteristic karst (limestone area) formations, it contains a incredible flora and fauna, including 172 bird, 700 plant, 18 mammal, 35 reptile and 19 amphibian species. On summer nights, you’ll encounter several species of marine turtles, among them the loggerhead and green, who move towards the beach in order to lay eggs; this makes the visit particularly interesting between May and October, as there are night visits to observe how they nest..
It also attracts the attention a great quantity of red swamp crayfishes that inhabit the reserve. You can also find a great quantity of fascinating caves in the area, such as the emblematic Pearls Cave.
To visit the park, you must hire a guide.
The reserve contains a visitors center where you can find guides, and where specialized tours and various intriguing circuits are organized.
