Declared a National Monument in 1980, Cueva de los Portales is located only 11 km from Parque La Güira, in the province of Pinar del Río.
The route of this cave is about 30 meters high in some places, with large stalactites hanging from the ceiling where, if you look closely, you can see some nocturnal animals such as bats. In addition, the Caiguanabo River passes through this huge cave and flows slowly through this mogote. The route offers several viewpoints through which you can get different perspectives of this rugged landscape.
Together with three other caves, El Espejo, Salvador and Cueva Oscura, it forms a cavernous formation with great scenic value. It attracted the attention of some of the most economically powerful people of its time, such as Manuel Cortina in 1947, who used it for his personal use.
In October 1962, the cave became a refuge and headquarters for the Western Army, commanded by Che Guevara.
At present, an open-air museum has been built in the area that contains some interesting items from the times of the Revolution. Che Guevara's bed and his chessboard for example.
Due to its proximity to the Parque La Güira, the Cueva de los Portales is a great place for bird watchers, as you can see the multitude of birds that surround this natural enclave.
