The amazing Mural de la Prehistoria (Prehistoric Mural) is painted on the wall of the Pita mogote in Sierra de los Órganos, 4 km west of the town of Viñales, in western Cuba.
The work of the wonderful Prehistoric Mural began in 1961 following the design of Leovigildo González Morillo, who acquired his knowledge mainly from the teachings of the famous artist Diego Rivera. The Mural has a length of 120 m, being one of the biggest open-air paintings in the world and it took four years and twenty farmers to complete it.

Before starting, the stone was washed and prepared to prevent the erosion from deteriorating the paint. Then, it was painted with a paintbrush, showing a landscape that includes dinosaurs, snails and giant marine reptiles among others, besides human beings. The purpose is to represent the evolutionary process of life from the artist's point of view, which in turn will be nuanced by the perception of the visitors who contemplate it.
A visit to this large complex full of vivid colours is one of the best ways of getting close to the art of the inhabitants of Viñales.
The Prehistoric Mural is about 4 km from Viñales, in the Valle de Dos Hermanas. If you are looking for a quieter visit you can go by taxi, but if you want to feel the nature and be able to do a different route we recommend you go by bike, as it is not a difficult route.
