20 km west of Viñales, in El Moncada, is the Gran Caverna de Santo Tomás (Great Cavern of Saint Thomas), considered the largest cave system in Cuba and the second largest in the Americas.
The cave does not cease to amaze, not only because of its over 46 km length, but also because of all the beauty within.
The cave never ceases to amaze, not only due to its shape, but to all that is found within.
The indigenous art (an Indian mural), and the fact that the Santo Tomás Cavern was one of the most important areas of settlement for runaway slaves escaping sugar plantations, give the cavern a magnificent cultural heritage concerning historical aspects of the Black and Indian populations of Cuba.
The presence of aquifers, the extraordinary stalactites and stalagmites, and the odd rock formations make the cave and area of spectacular beauty, the perfect place for practicing speleology.
You can only access the cavern via a guided visit, 1 km in length and lasting 90 minutes.
The organizers will provide you with the required equipment, which is basically a helmet and a flashlight.
We recommend that practitioners of speleology with a more exhaustive knowledge go directly to the Antonio Núñez Jiménez National School of Speleology.
You also have the chance to enjoy a tour through the little museum, which the center offers to visitors.
