Fuerte de San Hilario (San Hilario Fort) is located in the eastern zone of Cayo Sabinal Cay, that has a lot of history although it is a virgin area of Cuba.
The architectonic work was built in 1831 by spaniards as a military stronghold to restore the order and keep controlled the pirates, that used to attack the zone during the 17th and 18th centuries. Years later, it became a prison. In 1875, it witnessed the only Carlist revolt in Cuba, when an uprising took place in opposition to the Spanish monarchy of the time.
