Built at the end of the 18th century, the former Plaza de la Constitución Square, today Céspedes Park, was erected as the point where all the city converged.
In each one of the four corners of the square there are four sphinxes pointing the four cardinal points. Furthermore, in your relaxed walk you can also contemplate the busts of people as relevant for Cuban history as Merchán, Masó, Martí and Maceo.
Despite this, what is really characteristic from the beautiful park is the Mudejar plaza on its center.
Nowadays there is just one of the wells in the square, from where they used to take water in case of fire; while the one which was in the center was blocked off to build the Moorish plaza.
Built at the beginning of the 20th century and opened in 1924, the beautiful hexagonal plaza follows the pattern of the one in the Courtyard of the Lions in the Alhambra of Granada, in Spain.
The purpose of its construction was to make it the headquarters of the Municipal Band of Concerts. It was also here where was exhibited the Demajagua bell.
Nowadays, apart from concerts, the plaza is used as center for several politic and cultural activities.
Due to its historic, cultural and architectural value, the construction was declared Local Monument in 1991.
Another attraction in the park is the statue of the Cuban singer and composer Carlos Puebla, whose music transmitted the values of the Cuban Revolution. Its freshness resides in the fact that he is sitting in one of the benches of the square with his inseparable guitar.
Don’t miss the chance to walk along one of the most important parks of Manzanillo, a place full of history.
