Located in the southeast of Cuba we will find, connected to the Maisí system, a gorgeous park formed in part by the system of marine terraces (submerged and emerged) over calcareous rocks most important and better preserved in the country.
Declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, the Park has interesting historic and natural characteristics.
Dealing with history, this space was the spot where disembarked the Castro brothers with Che Guevara from Mexico in 1956, to finish with the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. From that comes its name and the one of the replica of the yacht you’ll find in the trip.
Dealing with nature, visitors will admire not only the gorgeous cliffs emerging in different spots of the park and fruit of the imposing marine terraces.
The place has plenty of archaeological sites, standing out the El Guafe, of which we will talk about later, and which is formed by a group of funerary and ceremonial caves, as well as an habitable zone where have been placed 7 idols, among which has been sculpted the Agua Cave la deidad antillana Atabeira. Moreover, in this place you’ll have the chance to see real Pre-Columbian objects from more than 1,000 years ago.
What’s more, from Colonial times is preserved the “Vargas” Lighthouse (Cruz cape) erected in 1859, and finished in 1861; but it was 10 years later when the complex made up by the lighthouse and house was opened.
It is also relevant the submerged area in the Arrecifes Coralinos creating an ideal seabed for diving; especially due to the great depth of the sea in the areas close to the coast, forming flows of really clean water, allowing an excellent development of marine life.
Its total extension is 25.764 hectares. Declared National Park in 1986, it is the first one to be so in Cuba. It was also named National Monument by the National Monuments Commission in 2002.
It is interesting to know the Portada de la Libertad Monument is the main entrance to the park. This tours guide you with the corridors you go over by hiking, following the route the group of expeditionaries took to reach Sierra Maestra Mountains. You’ll also be able to go by horse, practice water sports or diving.
Don’t miss the chance to spend a day exploring the most beautiful natural landscapes in the country.
