The Manzanillo Theater is one of the most relevant institutions in the cultural life of Manzanillo from its foundation, on September 14th 1856, until nowadays.
It has been visited by personalities from the world of entertainment, what has helped Manzanillo to be a city with a wide cultural field.
The idea of collaboration with some money to build a theatre that would liven up the social life of the city appeared at the same time as Carlos Manuel de Céspedes arrived at the city.
The result was an exquisite Neoclassical building with Italian Renaissance elements. Its horseshoe shape, frescoes painted on the wall, and red velvet adornments, result of several refurbishments along years, have make it an unreal site that will move you to the time when they started to build the first Colonial buildings.
In the first years after its opening, the Manzanillo Theater developed a flurry of activity. On it acted some of the most relevant theater companies in the country, as well as instrumental and opera music artists.
The Manzanillo Theater also hosted the La Compañía de Teatro Española, performing a zarzuela, enjoyed by those Cubans who, not used to that style and mix of music and theater, attended it.
In the following years, specifically after 1926, the flurry of activity typical from the Manzanillo Theater increased.
This theater was visited by almost all the Creole theater companies, which plays were a way to politically protest against the regime.
The Theater opened its doors to a new kind of art more and more accepted: the cinema. Both silent films and speaking ones were quite accepted by the public from Manzanillo.
Moreover, new Spanish companies dealing with drama or comedy appeared back again.
Magic shows and conferences were also organized in here.
In some occasions they decided to use the earned money for some charitable cause.
Currently, after the last restoration in 2002, it is still working , recently acting on it the Ballet de Camaguey and Contemporary Dance of Cuba.
