Marea del Portillo is a small population next to Manzanillo with a difficult access, located between the Caribbean Sea and mountains.
Despite its grey sand, it is one of the most beautiful spots of the island. It is mostly frequented by Canadians, who appreciate its coral seabeds and the quality of its beaches.
Marea del Portillo offers several alternatives for tourists, like horseback rides (5CUC approximately), a tour by horse-drawn carriage (4CUC approximately), or the chance to visit Las Yaguas Waterfall, which access can be made via four-wheel for approximately 49 CUC.
Marea del Portillo has a Diving International Center, a perfect place for divers, as it offers inexpensive immersions. It also includes other aquatic options, like twilight boat rides, high seas fishing or marine safaris. (Prices vary depending on the number of persons and the material).
Marea del Portillo offers the chance to do interesting trips to short cascades in the area.
One of them, El Salto, has 20 km way and return. The setting where this trail is located is quite beautiful. On your way you’ll find green fields and a crystalline waters lake where flows a river you must cross to reach to your destination, the short El Salto cascade, forming a gorgeous natural pool.
They do also organize other trips, not as famous as the former, to small natural jewels hidden in the vicinity of Marea del Portillo. For example, the one leaving from the village of Mata Dos, 20 km to the town. The trail follows the course of the Motas River, flowing into a cascada known as Salto de Guayabito, located in a privileged natural spot.
