The Ñico López Park Museum is located in the former club of officers of the military headquarters Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, in the province of Granma.
Its historic importance lays on the last stage of the independence fights. In detail, it is the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Headquarters attacked on the 26th July 1953, simultaneously to the Attack to the Moncada Headquarters in Santiago de Cuba. This symbolic date has become a celebrated day in the whole country, the 26th July Day, Day of the National Rebellion.
Before hosting a headquarter, the land was part of the Spain’s Fort, which counted with, among other, with its own concentration camp. However, in 1903 began the constructions of the headquarter and it was built the Detachment of the Rural Guard Carlos Manuel de Céspedes. When the Cuban Revolution succeeded, the fort was used for different functions, which meant the progressive disappearance of its original structure.
In 1978, the area was opened as park and the space occupied by the officer’s club became a museum room. In the gallery you can see objects and documents related to the Attack to the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Headquarters on the 26th July 1953, just as other related to the lives of the different heroes who lead this historic event. The Park counts also with the famous room ‘The Assailants’ hosted in which was the ‘Gran Casino’ lodging, occupied the previous night by the attackers of the Headquarters and visited by Fidel Castro on his way through Santiago de Cuba in order to take part in the Assault of the Moncada Headquarter. This room also counts with fascinating collections related with an important historic event.
In the Park take place different cultural events such as the Bayamo’s Flowers Fair; political ones, as the commemoration of the 26th July, and also others related to the encouragement of respect attitudes towards the Heritage.
Due to its historic value for the city of Bayamo and the country in general, the Monuments National Commission declared it in 2004, National Monument.
