On your visit to the province of Matanzas don’t miss your chance to visit the Cuevas de Bellamar (Bellamar Caves).

Dating back 300,000 years, they are one of the natural treasures of Cuba. They were discovered in 1861 by a worker of the landowner Manuel Santos Parga. He prepared the caves and provided them with a guide with the intention of transforming the Bellamar Caves into a tourist center.

To get to the caves (located 5 km to the southeast of Matanzas), your best option is to take buses 16, 17 or 20 heading east, and ask the driver to stop next to Calle 226. Once there, continue walking. After a short ascent of 30 meters you’ll find the Bellamar Caves, with access from a museum at the entrance.

Breathtakingly beautiful, they contain much scientific and historical knowledge which adds to the area’s rich cultural heritage.

Inside have been found remains of birds and vertebrates from the Quaternary Period. Its strange geological formations will be exceptionally interesting for lovers of crystallography or speleology.

Apart from the amazing stalactites, stalagmites and helictites it hosts, the Bellamar Caves house an incredible natural phenomena only found here. They are solid calcite crystals hanging from stalactites, and have attracted the attention of geologists from all over the world.

In the Cuevas de Bellamar Caves you’ll also be able to appreciate its other beautiful elements, like the geodes, an underground stream going through the entire area, and the amazing blankets of a crystalline coating that make the rooms shine in a rather unique and special way
