The rarely visited Museo Nacional Ruta del Esclavo (Slave Route National Museum) was installed in the famous San Severino Castle of Matanzas on June 16th 2009.
The museum is the result of a project known as the Slave Route Project, formed by the initiative of Haiti and other countries of African heritage which form part of UNESCO.
The Slave Route National Museum of Matanzas tries to show the world in an denouncing manner, the horrors of slavery that marked a certain time in history of America, and to avoid it happening again.
In Cuba, the majority of the population is mestizo, so this is a rather painful topic for the inhabitants of the island.
The museum has four exhibition rooms with archeological pieces, photographs and texts that bear witness to a past that still affects the present. They attempt to act as a testament to the incredible courage of the men and women who lost everything except their will to live.
Some photographs and a few illustrations demonstrate the practice of calimbo, the marking of slaves with a branding iron, like animals, with the initials of their owners.
