Very close to the Ambrosio Cave, towards the end of the Hicacos Peninsula, you will bump into the Reserva Ecológica Varahicacos (Varahicacos Ecological Reservation), in Varadero, Cuba.
In contrast to other caves in the country it is small, and its vegetation looks more like the original vegetation which grows in the North of Cuba. There are plenty of Hicacos, a plant characteristic of the area, which also owe its name to the peninsula, and it is very appreciated for the taste of its white fruit.
In the reservation you will also find other native species of great interest, such as a long-lived cactus more than 600 years old.
The Varahicacos Reservation is an excellent place for the sighting of land, aquatic, migratory and endemic birds. It is a magnificent and amusing area for all those who enjoy ornithology.
If you visit the reservation, you will have the chance to discover reptiles in every corner; almost all of them, such as the iguana, are native to the peninsula.
The island’s tropical climate also affects this tiny corner of Matanzas, but the soft marine breeze reduces the boiling hot Caribbean heat and encourages the proliferation an array of marine life.
The area’s pristine waters host corals full of colorful fish, bivalves, crustaceans and all kinds of vertebrates which inhabit the sea, especially sharks and some turtles and marine mammals.
The area’s wider variety of fauna is not just considered important in Matanzas, rather its importance extends across the whole island.
