Located to the northeast of Versailles and built in 1735, the San Severino Castle is an amazing battlemented fortress built in Matanzas following 16th and 17th century Italian and French Renaissance patterns.
It has been considered Cuba’s most important building since the birth of the city of Matanzas.
The San Severino Castle was designed to be one of the city’s points of defense, including the port, following the construction model of a Medieval castle, being a square of perfect dimensions and with battlements on its corners.
The castle was witness to the arrival of African slaves in the 18th century, working later as a prison for Cuban Rebels, some of them being executed in the interior square of the fortress.
The San Severino Castle served as a prison until the 1970s. Nowadays it houses the Slaves Route Museum.
If you decide to visit this amazing construction, you’ll not only enjoy an interesting range of historical and political information but also the wonderful views of the sea from the square.
