Palmar de Junco Statium is the province of Matanzas’ oldest baseball stadiums.
Located in the Pueblo Nuevo Quarter, the first official match took place in 1874 and throughout the Colonial period several tournaments in the National League of Cuba also took place. As the years went by, its value was recognized, being declared a Local Monument in 1979 and then a National Monument in 1991. Nowadays, it is being discussed whether or not to transform it into a Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame as, although it still houses some tournaments and functions as a baseball academy, the most important matches take place in the new Victoria Stadium in Playa Girón Beach, Matanzas.
In regards to its curious name, no one knows exactly where it comes from. There were no palm trees (Palma) where the stadium was built, however its owner’s surname was Junco.
Nowadays in Palmar, you can visit the Provincial Academy of Baseball, which has been refurbished and enlarged, so nowadays it has teaching staff and a Directors Board.
Since its foundation in 1874 it has only gone through one notable in 1960, which has allowed the place to remain in good condition.
Visit this delightful place and enjoy one of the most important places in the development of the Cuban national sport.
