If you walk through Calle 306 Street until the end, approximately 1.5km from the town center of Matanzas, you will find Iglesia de Monserrate Church, founded on September 8th 1875.
The church is one of the most relevant samples of Cuban Colonial architecture and one of the main 19th century chapels.
Neoclassical in style, this small and beautiful church was built by Catalan settlers who held the economic power and political influence in the province of Matanzas. Due to this, Monserrate houses remnants of two cultures: the Cuban Matancera, thanks to which the church owes its location, and the Catalan, one of the richest in Spain.
The Iglesia de Monserrate Church follows the Doric order of construction, characterized by the stonework in its walls and the use of tiles and wood for its roof. The original project has been refurbished several times.
From its vantage point you’ll be able to enjoy spectacular panoramic views over Matanzas and the Valley of Yumirí.
If you wish to eat in the area, you’ll find a few modest and touristic restaurants close by.
