The Museo Farmaceútico (Pharmaceutical Museum) is located in front of the La Libertad Park, in Calle Milanés in Matanzas.
Awarded the status of a National Monument, you will have the chance to observe and appreciate this 19th century old French pharmacy exactly the way it looked at that time.
Founded in 1882 by Ernesto Triolet and one of his relative, it is the first one of this style built in Latin America, and the only one of its kind being preserved in the world.
It was transformed into a museum on the first of May 1964, and it left a grand inheritance in the form of a perfectly preserved collections of tools from the time.
Take advantage of one of the educational guided tours the museum offers on the floor containing several rooms that used to form part of the pharmacy such as its back room, sales room or lab. The last one is extremely fascinating, as it is preserved exactly the way it was when first open to the public.
Among the treasures housed in the Pharmaceutical Museum, its collection of French porcelain jars and North American stained-glass bottles containing medicines stand out above all.
The well-preserved medicine books are as fascinating as the tools used, not only due to their historic value but also because nowadays students and experts take advantage of the knowledge they contain.
Some of the natural ingredients used at the time are still preserved, as well as thousands of paper and glass labels used to classify the medicines, which are located on the pharmacy’s shelves.
