Taking a walk through the city center will lead you to discover the Parque La Libertad (La Libertad Park), a wonderful place to stay in touch with the purest side of life in Matanzas. It is a place dedicated to recreation, conversation, walks, or games, often with lots of cultural activities.
It is what used to be the old Plaza de Armas in 1800, a place where important plans to overthrow the government were devised, to gain independence by fighting against the Spanish army, etc.
In the center there are two statues that represent the city’s most important ensemble of sculpture. The sculptures are Italian, built by the sculptor Buemi and unveiled in 1909. First, there is a sculpture of a woman raising her arms up with broken chains in her hands, shouting “Freedom!”; while just behind her and reaching four meters above her is the sculpture of José Martí, famous poet and founder of the Cuban Revolutionary Party.
This incredible park is surrounded by some of the most relevant and characteristic buildings in Matanzas like the Velasco Theater, the Hotel Velasco, the original Pharmaceutical Museum, the Spanish Casino or the Council Building, among others.
Don’t miss the chance to visit one of the most relevant cultural and historical places in the city of Matanzas.
