The San Carlos Borromeo Cathedral, or Matanzas Cathedral, is located quite isolated from the hubbub that normally enlivens the city center of Matanzas.
Located in Calle Jovellanos Street, the La Libertad Park and the Junco Palace Provincial Museum can be used as points of reference.
Construction of the Cathedral began in 1693, but wasn’t finished until 1736. It was refurbished several times and it was finally considered a Cathedral in 1912.
Some of its parts are quite run down but that doesn’t affect the beauty of one of the greatest symbols of the 19th century Cuban eclecticism, creating this structure of distinct Neoclassical and Baroque elements.
In its interior are some of the most famous frescos in Cuba, even though they are not in the greatest condition.
