The drawbridge above the Yayabo River is the heritage symbol of the city. It is located Southwestern from the Urban Old Town, in the former ‘Paso de las Carretas’ and connects the historical area with the Colón Neighbourhood. The need of making easier the crossing of the Yayabo River arose, since during rainy times it was difficult to cross it.
It began to be built in 1817 and it was officially opened in 1825. Its design is similar to a medieval bridge because it is made of quarried stone. It is comprised of five arches which reduce the height as it gets closer to its shores. It has a height of 9 meters and 5 meters long.
There is a myth about it construction which tells that it was made of cow milk, brought in great quantities to wet the mixture of lime and salt, and the lack of cement. This is the reason it miraculously resisted almost two centuries.
