The origin of this famous park goes back in time to the end of the 17th century, when it was raised there the Ermita de la Veracruz Shrine, which from 1716 on was accompanied by the San Francisco Convent.
Formerly, the park used to be the Plaza de Armas Square where open-air concerts were played and in the mornings the troops made their exercises. Nowadays, the Parque Serafín Sánchez is the amusement, cultural and commercial center of the city of Sancti Spíritus, and is surrounded by houses and buildings remodelled in the 19th century.
